The Institute has recently established different Centers of Excellence with generous philanthropic support of its alumni and industry in fields as diverse as Artificial Intelligence, Neurogenerative Diseases, Digital Health, Oil, Gas and Energy Sector, Steel, Green Energy for Sustainability, Public Policy, Quantum Science and Technology, Bioengineering, Nanotechnology etc. to focus on new, specific and interdisciplinary problems.

IIT Bombay has also introduced a Bachelor of Science (BS) program in Economics and a B.Tech. program in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IEOR), along with several Master’s programs and courses.

About Professor Shireesh Kedare:

Professor Shireesh Kedare officially took charge as the Director of IIT Bombay on May 6, 2024. He is a Professor in the Department of Energy Sciences and Engineering and has served as Professor-in-Charge of the Centre of Excellence in Oil, Gas and Energy, IIT Bombay.

He earned his B.Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1985 at IIT Bombay and completed his Ph.D. in 1992, also from IIT Bombay.

Professor Kedare holds various administrative positions at IIT Bombay and outside of it including Member, BoG (IIT Madras); Expert Member (S&T) of the Commission, Khadi Village and Industries Commission (KVIC), Government of India; Director, Su-Lok Chetana Pratishthan, Satara; Nominated Member, Council of IITs, Ministry of Education; Member, Solar Thermal Energy Sub- Committee, Bureau of Indian Standards, Government of India; Member, Research Advisory Council (RAC) of NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA), NTPC Ltd.; Governor’s Nominee on the Advisory Board for SNDT University, Mumbai; member of the Board of Management for Gandhigram Rural Institute Society, Dindigul. In the past, he has been Independent Director, ONGC Ltd. and Director (R&D), Clique Developments Ltd., Mumbai.

Prof. Kedare’s research interests are in the area of solar technologies, wind energy, energy transition, renewable energy systems for decarbonization, rural devices, and participatory technology development.

He has extensive exposure to industry, entrepreneurship, product development and commercialization. In the capacity as Director (R&D), Clique Development Ltd., his contributions have been instrumental in the research, development, design, fabrication, installation, performance testing and commercialization of solar Fresnel concentrating reflectors, particularly the ‘Arun’ solar boiler for industrial process heat.

He also has wide exposure and experience in working with farmers, artisans and people in rural and tribal areas over the last four decades and has worked on technologies for people.

With a significant administrative experience across organisations, Professor Kedare has unique knowledge in developing and improving organizational systems and structures in small as well as large industries, academic organizations, as well as voluntary and non-governmental organizations. As a board member of ONGC, he helped streamline the administrative process, and as a member of Board of Governors, IIT Madras, he has contributed to issues related to faculty and industry connect.

Professor Kedare has a publication record with over 57 papers in international journals and over 44 papers in international conferences/proceedings, has delivered more than 100 lectures, and guided 13 Ph.D students so far, and more than 90 Master’s dissertations. He has also won more than 10 awards, including the prestigious Dr. P. K. Patwardhan Award for Technology Development in 2014 and the Departmental Award for Excellence in Teaching – 2018.
