Former President of Mexico, Mr. Vicente Fox visits IIT Bombay

The former President of Mexico, Mr. Vicente Fox visited the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) campus on February 12, 2014, and interacted with the students and institute functionaries. Mr. Fox served as the President of Mexico from the year 2000 to 2006.

Accompanied by his wife Mrs. Martha Fox, Mr. Fox met Prof. H.S Pandalai, Acting Director, IIT Bombay along with Deputy Director, Prof. Subhasis Choudhuri, Deans and Heads of several departments during his visit. During the interaction, Prof. Pandalai informed him about the recent developments at IIT Bombay and its strong focus on R& D, which has enabled the institution to attract research grants worth Rs 270 crores from external agencies during last year. Prof. D.B. Phatak, head of the Aakash Tablet Project at IIT Bombay briefed Mr. Fox about the Aakash project and how the low-cost tablet is being utilized for effective dissemination of education. Mr. Fox also made a visit to Shenoy Innovation Studio at Industrial Design Centre of IIT Bombay. Mr. Fox gave a TechniGraphicS Lecture during his visit on "Contributions of IITs to India & the world: An international perspective". Addressing the students of IIT Bombay, he said, "For you students, it is a lifetime opportunity to study in an institution like IIT Bombay, which further opens plethora of avenues for you. You should dream to be happy and successful but not merely in monetary terms but also where you are able to make a difference to the society." Mr. Fox answered several questions raised by the students and other members of the audience on the topics ranging from social disparates to brain drain. Mr Fox and his wife saw the sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi and other marchers of Dandi March, prepared at IIT Bombay as a part of Dandi Memorial project. "It is a great honour for us to visit a great institution like IIT Bombay, which is recognized world wide as a state-of-the-art institution," he remarked, during his visit.
